How to Host a New Year's Eve Party

A New Year's Eve party builds toward one moment, so the planning works backward from midnight. Choose a color story, set up one place that feels like the center of the party, keep food easy to eat standing up, and have favors and a toast ready for the countdown.

The short answer

Pick two colors, like black and silver or black and gold, and carry them through the banner, plates and napkins. Set up a drink station or dessert cart under a fringe banner as the focal point, and serve small bites that guests can eat standing up. About fifteen minutes before midnight, hand out headbands and noisemakers and pour the drinks for the toast. For families, a noon or early-evening countdown lets kids celebrate too.

Choose a look before you shop

Most New Year's Eve parties fall into one of three directions. Picking one first keeps the decor, tableware and favors working together.

Plan the party, step by step

Work backward from midnight and each piece falls into place.

  1. Send invitations two to three weeks out

New Year's Eve calendars fill early. Say whether the party runs past midnight, whether it is dressy or casual, and whether kids are welcome, so guests can plan rides and sitters.

  2. Create one focal point

Choose one spot, like a bar cart, a dessert table or the wall behind the drinks, and put most of the decor there. A silver fringe banner with a Happy New Year banner layered in front gives guests a natural place to gather and take photos.

  3. Serve food that works standing up

Most New Year's Eve parties are cocktail style. Plan small bites guests can hold in one hand, set them out in waves through the night, and keep a dessert, like a cake or a tray of cookies, for after the toast. Shaped plates and cocktail napkins make a buffet feel planned.

  4. Set up a drink station

Champagne or sparkling wine for the toast, a signature cocktail, and sparkling cider or a mocktail for kids and anyone not drinking. Chill the bubbly early and have glasses or cups lined up before eleven thirty.

  5. Plan the countdown

About fifteen minutes before midnight, hand out favors and pour drinks so no one misses the moment. Put the countdown on a TV or a phone with a reliable clock, and have someone ready to lead the last ten seconds.

Favors for the countdown

Favors are what make midnight feel like an event. Plan one wearable and one noisemaker or popper per guest, plus a few extra for late arrivals.

Glitter headbands and crowns are the favorite with adults, since they look good in photos without being a costume. Our star headbands and the NYE crown headband both work for grown-ups and kids. For a small take-home, a few chocolates or a mini bottle of sparkling cider in a box with a tag makes a simple thank-you.

How much to plan per guest

  • Two or three cocktail napkins per hour, since guests snack all night.
  • Two small plates each: one for appetizers and one for dessert after midnight.
  • One wearable favor and one noisemaker or popper each.
  • About half a bottle of sparkling wine per adult for the night, and one glass each for the toast.

A New Year's Eve party with kids

Most kids will not make it to midnight, and that is fine. Many families celebrate with a noon countdown, or ring in the new year with another time zone. London reaches midnight in the late afternoon or early evening across the US, and New York's midnight arrives early for anyone farther west. The party feels just as real, and everyone is in bed on time.

Keep the same decor and add a few kid touches: paper cups for sparkling cider, a balloon drop or confetti for the countdown, and headbands for everyone. A short list of resolutions or predictions for the year, read out loud at the end, gives kids something to keep.

New Year's Eve Party FAQs

What do you need for a New Year's Eve party?

A focal point of decor, like a fringe banner and a Happy New Year banner, small plates and plenty of cocktail napkins, drinks for the toast, easy food that works standing up, and a favor for each guest at midnight, like a headband or noisemaker.

What are good New Year's Eve party favors for adults?

Glitter headbands and crowns, noisemakers and confetti poppers for the countdown. For a take-home, a small box with chocolates or a mini bottle of sparkling cider and a tag makes a simple thank-you.

What colors are traditional for New Year's Eve?

Black with silver or gold is the classic look, sometimes with a touch of white or champagne. Pick two and repeat them in the banner, plates, napkins and favors.

What food should I serve at a New Year's Eve party?

Small bites guests can hold in one hand, like sliders, skewers, a cheese board, shrimp cocktail and dips, set out in waves through the night. Save a dessert, like cake or cookies, to serve after the midnight toast.

How do you decorate for New Year's Eve on a budget?

Focus the decor in one spot instead of spreading it around the room. A fringe banner, a Happy New Year banner and coordinated plates and napkins on one table give the party a center without decorating every wall.

How do you celebrate New Year's Eve with kids?

Hold an early countdown at noon, or ring in the new year with another time zone in the early evening. Give kids headbands and sparkling cider, add a balloon drop or confetti, and have everyone share a resolution or prediction.

How much champagne do I need for a New Year's Eve party?

A standard bottle pours about six glasses. Plan at least one glass per adult for the toast, and about half a bottle per adult if sparkling wine is the main drink of the night.

When should I send New Year's Eve party invitations?

Two to three weeks ahead. Calendars fill early around the holidays, and guests need time to plan rides, sitters and outfits.
